"Mr President, let me once again pay tribute to Mr Fisas Ayxela for the excellent report, which is very much in line with the Commission’s thinking and the challenges facing sport in Europe. I am happy to say that the Commission is already implementing some of the main ideas expressed in the report.
I will not deal with the question of the logos on the flag. As a matter of fact I see that the Members who raised this objection were in a hurry to leave the Chamber, but honestly we have many more important challenges in sport to deal with than this. One that comes to mind is the question of violence because, as a result of violence, we have lost 70 people tonight, with one thousand injured. Violence, match fixing, sports agents and many issues are challenges with which we have to deal very urgently.
As we look to the future, let us take encouragement from the Commission’s proposal for a new programme, which gives us the tools and resources to develop a European dimension in sport. Therefore I look forward to cooperating with all of you who are great believers in sport and working together in order to achieve what we aspire for in sport."@en1
