The President of the Republic of Ecuador has brought criminal proceedings against the journalist, the newspaper and its owners because of the opinion that was expressed. The proceedings have led to a three-year sentence, given by two courts, and a fine of USD 40 million, which presents a serious threat to the newspaper’s very survival. A number of organisations have made reference to this matter, such as Human Rights Watch, Reporters Without Borders, and other international media and organisations working in the field of human rights.
