"Every year, about 1.3 billion tonnes of food are wasted around the world, roughly one-third of the food produced for human consumption. It is estimated that every European citizen throws away on average 179 kilograms of food per year, much of which is still edible. We must start off from these figures in order to adopt a coordinated European strategy and effective measures that can dramatically reduce food waste. To date, the European Union has underestimated this problem, fraught with consequences that are not only social but also economic and environmental. Recent studies show that no less than 10% of greenhouse gas emissions from developed countries derive from the production of food that is then thrown away on a daily basis. With the resolution adopted today, we are calling for an integrated and coordinated approach to be introduced – from producer to consumer – to significantly reduce food wastage. Awareness raising and consumer education will play a key role in promoting the idea that what is wasted can instead become a resource. This has been successfully demonstrated by the ‘last minute market’, a project set up by the University of Bologna, which promotes the ‘reuse’ of food within solidarity networks."@en1
