"The ever increasing discrepancy between farm input and production costs, on the one hand, and farm gate prices, on the other, is putting European agriculture at risk of becoming uneconomic. We therefore need to lower the costs to farmers of energy, feeds, fertilisers and seed, to use production resources efficiently and sustainably, and to reduce farmers’ dependence on big business. In addition, farmers need to be supported in their efforts to adapt their farms along ecological lines. Investments in this area pay off in the long term, since damage to the environment is generally very costly."@en1
