"I supported the recommendation on the draft Council decision on the position of the European Union in relation to the draft regulation of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe on pedestrian safety and to the draft regulation of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe concerning light emitting diode (LED) light sources. The regulation discussed provides for the application of the UNECE regulations for the purpose of the EC vehicle type-approval on a compulsory basis. This would mean that the type-approval of motor vehicles, their trailers and systems, as well as technical components, would be applied without the necessity for further, additional type-approval. This would make it easier for European producers, for authorities in individual states, and for consumers, by avoiding the duplication of technical requirements and certification procedures. The same standards would be used in many countries, which would radically reduce bureaucratic requirements."@en1
