"Mr President, for more than a year the European Parliament has been complaining that antidemocratic abuses have been taking place not only in Hungary but also in Romania and Bulgaria, which openly conflict with European values, culture and legal regulations. For more than a year these actions have been accumulating, and the decision made by the Commission today to initiate infringement proceedings only serves to confirm that we were right to be concerned. For more than a year the role of the national parliament, opposition parties, trade unions and press freedom have been under attack not only in Hungary, but also in Romania. For more than a year the European Commission has either been timid or said nothing. Against this background, I ask you, Vice-President Reding, whether today President Barroso and yourself are part of the left-wing conspiracy which our colleagues from the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) have been feverishly talking about, or are you taking note of these actions? During these troubled times, I call for the Commission not to keep silent, but to act as guardian of the Treaties."@en1
