"I have voted for this resolution, not because I am enamoured of the content of the so-called six-pack (I voted against much of it) or because the euro is the way forward for all – it is not. I am supporting it because I want decision making on matters of direct interest to the EU to be taken within a clear legal framework and on a clear legal basis. I regret the British Government’s refusal to support concerted EU action and thus assist a push towards this new arrangement. An intergovernmental agreement can inhabit a grey zone, out of clear parliamentary oversight. We need clear parliamentary oversight: from both the EP and national parliaments, and this resolution states that clearly. The proposed intergovernmental agreement also sees governments stepping back from decisions made a few weeks ago, and this does not increase confidence or legal certainty. As the resolution clearly states, we need investment, not just austerity. We need a change of direction – towards a different future, based on reducing the gap between rich and poor and on new investment to help us work within environmental limits. The intergovernmental agreement is a distraction and provides no real solutions."@en1
