"Mr President, I do not wish to address the empty words we have heard from Mr Barroso and the Prime Minister. They do not add much to the political debate. However, I take exception to the agitation against Hungary in this House. Parliament is not alone in this – when we see how the Commission has acted against Hungary then it is evident that its manoeuvres have taken on an aspect of blackmail. As an Austrian, I am reminded of the way the European Union imposed stupid sanctions against Austria in 2000, leaving itself with egg on its face. The accusations are unjust and simply incorrect. Mr Orbán’s government has proven time and time again that it is democratic. It was elected by two-thirds of the Hungarian electorate and is democratically legitimised. It has also repeatedly shown in the past, during its Council Presidency, that it is a reliable partner, not only within the European Union, but also within NATO. Hungary cannot be dealt with in this way. Those who believe that this agitation will succeed in returning the socialists, liberals, old-style Marxists or even neo-Marxists to power are simply fooling themselves.
