". (DE) The EU’s Central Asia Strategy was established in 2007. No one would deny the increasing role played by the Central Asian states in their region in the geopolitical context. They deserve our full attention as economic partners but also as states which still have a long way to go in terms of democratisation, modernisation and the rule of law as they enter their third decade of independence from the former Soviet Union. Unfortunately, Parliament has once again missed out on an opportunity to deal with this issue, allowing the report from Ms Kiil-Nielsen to pass without debate. This draws attention to deficiencies in the EU’s pursuit of a uniform strategy in relation to Central Asia, but offers no new impetus and seeks to ‘censure’ individual states on the basis of a narrow set of criteria. Because of these weaknesses in the report, I had no alternative but to abstain from voting."@en1
