"I fully support the conclusions contained in Mr Lisek’s report. The defence sector is undoubtedly one of those most severely affected by the austerity policies implemented as a result of the economic crisis. At this rate, Europe risks being unable to shoulder its international responsibilities and seeing some of its traditional areas of strategic weakness, such as duplication of military capabilities and its inability to carry out operations without US support, intensify.
In order to prevent such a scenario from occurring, and to avoid draining funds from other important expenditure headings, the only effective solution, as the report indicates, is to move towards greater cooperation within the Union, with due respect for national prerogatives. This cooperation should cover all areas of defence but, in particular, contract liberalisation, technological research, coordination of planning and sharing of certain capabilities. Greater collaboration would, moreover, enable European countries to strengthen their own strategic autonomy and increase their political influence within the Atlantic Alliance."@en1
