"I voted against renewing the agreement between the EU and Morocco, which has ultimately been rejected by the European Parliament. The EU-Morocco agreement contains a clause on democracy and human rights, as do all agreements concluded by the EU, but as always, this was not taken into account during the negotiations on extending the agreement. Commercial interests were the main focus of discussions and the question of Western Sahara was not even mentioned. What is more, although one of the few improvements made in the Treaty of Lisbon is that the European Parliament has to give its consent to any international agreements, Parliament has barely been involved in the negotiating process. The European Parliament, the only democratically elected European institution, needs to defend that right."@en1
