"I voted against the extension of the EU-Morocco Fisheries Partnership Agreement because Western Sahara is not part of Morocco. Fishing in Saharan waters breaches international law. Making use of a bilateral agreement in order to fish in the waters off Western Sahara goes against international law. Moreover, fisheries in occupied Western Sahara are strictly controlled by the Moroccan security services and not by the Sahrawi population. Apart from the indisputable fact that this agreement violates international law, it also emerges from a Commission evaluation report that the agreement constitutes an enormous waste of European taxpayers’ money and contributes to the destruction of fish stocks. It is the most inefficient and wasteful of all the current bilateral fisheries agreements.
Each invested euro of the total of EUR 36 million which the Union pays to Morocco annually gives rise to a negative return of 83%! Moreover, the agreement does not make any contribution whatsoever to the development of the local fishing industry. Finally, the Commission did not consult the European Parliament or sufficiently involve it in the negotiation process. Rejection of this agreement is thus in line with the analysis carried out by the Legal Service of the European Parliament."@en1
