"Consumer associations inform us that the majority of people interviewed do not really understand the difference between a ‘fruit juice’ and a fruit ‘nectar’, between a ‘juice with no added sugars’ and a ‘natural fruit juice’. We believe that more needs to be done to clarify the situation to allow for free and informed choices. For example, a mixture of 90% apple juice and 10% strawberry juice will have to be labelled as ‘apple and strawberry juice’, whilst currently, the label is allowed to state ‘strawberry juice’. A generic name such as ‘juice mixture’ can be used if the product is manufactured from three or more fruits. This is the direction taken by the resolution which was voted on today, making the consumer the focus of the legislator’s attention. The Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) to which I belong also considers as equal the demands of producers: until now, European producers have been treated differently compared with their colleagues in third countries (the US and China, for example), who have imported fruit juices into the EU which have occasionally not undergone the strict controls to which European producers were subject. Today, we have guaranteed that this discrimination will stop, by imposing the same obligations on importers from third countries and ensuring that consumers can freely choose what product to buy on the basis of its quality."@en1
