"Mr President, I should like, first of all, to refer to what my colleagues said about the need for Turkey to participate in consultations on Syria; I, too, wish to support the same call. I come from Cyprus, but I believe that the pressure being exerted by my colleagues for Turkey to participate in settling Syria’s problems should also be exerted on Turkey to liberate Cyprus, to allow between 200 000 and 300 000 people to return to their homes, and to withdraw the 40 000 troops it has stationed in Cyprus. That will prove that we are in favour of freedom everywhere, not just for one part of the planet.
We believe that the Arab Spring does not appear to be followed by any sort of summer. It will probably be followed, to judge by the tens of thousands killed recently in Libya and now in Syria, by a deep, cold winter. A spring bloodshed is not an Arab Spring. We therefore call on the Syrian Government to start a national dialogue with the political forces of the opposition, with a view to finding a peaceful, political exit from this dangerous situation immediately, before it is too late for the country and its people. If we, as the European Union, wish to play a decisive role in promoting democracy and human rights, we need to focus our efforts on stating ..."@en1
