I very proudly served for 30 years as a military officer in Her Majesty’s armed forces on operational duties in many parts of the world. When I left the army in order to go into politics, while I was waiting for a seat, I did indeed spend a short time in the European Commission, where I had a very interesting insight into the ways that the Commission worked. This has provided a very good background and experience for what I do now."@en1
