"Mr President, the discussion that we are having here today is worrying, but at the same time illuminating. The very same Members that have been advocating a succession of attacks on the workers and people of Europe, in the name of deficits and debts, from wage cuts to the so-called adjustments aimed at ending public health, education and social security systems as we know them, are here today to claim bluntly that the military capacity of the EU has to be developed, ensuring that the budgetary constraints do not affect military spending. They are even arguing that there is a new driving force behind these expenses, as they did in the Council a year ago. This is a new impetus towards cooperation with NATO, the European Defence Agency, military research and the war industry, which is also claimed to be in line with the Treaty of Lisbon. New alarm bells are ringing and revealing the aggressive and dangerous nature of a capitalist system in agonising crisis. This also demonstrates that the struggle against anti-social EU policies and the struggle for peace should and must go hand-in-hand."@en1
