"Mr President, Baroness Ashton, the report we are debating today, on which I wish to congratulate Mr Lisek, concerns the future of the defence sector in this time of financial crisis and is extremely interesting. As far as we are concerned, there are two basic issues: firstly, we need to ensure that synergies and cooperation are strengthened at European level, in order to prevent resources from being wasted and, secondly, we need to safeguard jobs in the defence sector. The current situation calls for smart coordination, in order to lay the foundations for an internationally competitive industry which can create prospects for new jobs in the defence sector. Unfortunately, the restructuring of the defence industry is inevitable. What we need to ensure is that it is done with as few consequences as possible on employment. In the final analysis, European solidarity, specialisation, interoperability and complementarity are, in our view, the guidelines for a progressive policy in the defence sector and an answer to the crisis."@en1
