"If we are to help our companies gain market share abroad, we must not only demand the removal of barriers restricting trade between the European Union and its trading partners, but also secure reciprocity of market access. To this end, we must keep an up-to-date inventory of these barriers and put in place an early warning system. In view of the rapid growth in global trade outside the European Union, the Commission must urgently draw up a legislative proposal on an instrument for reciprocity in respect of access to third-country government procurement markets. The impact of foreign direct investment on the internal market also needs to be evaluated so as to forestall any potential adverse effects on European innovation and know-how in certain strategic sectors. Our European companies are internationally recognised for their know-how in the fields of infrastructure, transport, construction and advanced technology. Therefore, it is up to us to do all we can to enable them to access new markets."@en1
