"Mr President, if your house catches fire, your first thought is to try and put it out with any fire-fighting appliances at your disposal. You do not think about how to improve the workings of the fire department. That is common sense, unlike the decisions adopted at the summit on 9 December. The summit reversed the order of priorities, which is why, three days later, we are again discussing a partial, rather than an integrated solution to the crisis. The proof lies in the fact that the markets are already sending out discouraging messages and time is running out. However necessary they may be, economic governance and fiscal austerity alone cannot put out the fire. We need immediate and decisive involvement on the part of the European Central Bank. Mr Sarkozy spoke about the birth of a different Europe based on converging economies, fiscal rules and taxation. The problem with that is we may ultimately give birth to another Europe: a Europe of recession, unemployment, homelessness, soup kitchens, crime and despair, a Europe that, unfortunately, many Greek citizens have already started to experience. That is not the Europe of our dreams; it is the Europe of our worst nightmares."@en1
