"Modernisation of customs services is one of the tasks undertaken in order to facilitate business activities in the Union. Putting into practice the idea of centralised customs clearance, which will enable companies to notify goods electronically and make payments from their own office, may dramatically simplify customs procedures. Drafting an appropriate customs strategy, which is one of the priorities of the Member States, is also key for European competitiveness. It will help improve the protection of intellectual property rights and the fight against illegal imports of goods or counterfeit products. Another important matter relates to security issues, in terms of eliminating both imports of life-threatening materials and illegal immigration via freight transport. In order to be able to remain vigilant against the constant threat, the customs services must be placed in the best situation to ensure that only safe products that meet the legal requirements reach the Member States. I voted for the adoption of the report."@en1
