"I voted for this resolution on the negotiations concerning the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, firstly, because it urgently calls for this agreement to include conditionality clauses on the protection and promotion of human rights and, secondly, because it points out that Ukraine is of strategic importance to the European Union, not only in terms of energy potential, but also in terms of the management of migration flows and the fight against organised crime. The EU must remain steadfast in upholding its values and principles, which is why the association agreement should represent a real window of economic and commercial opportunity for Ukraine. However, in return, it must demand that Ukraine complies with European environmental commitments within the framework of its energy business, respects democratic values, the independence of the judiciary, human rights and fundamental freedoms, and, above all, honours all the commitments it has made under this association agreement. It is important to bear in mind that Ukraine is now on the Union’s doorstep, and that the strengthening of our ties with the country is linked to the effectiveness of our free trade area and of our area of freedom, security and justice."@en1
