"I voted for the resolution as I believe that we must offer our commitment to combat HIV/AIDS, as thousands of people are being infected each year. In the UK, 100 000 people are living with HIV and there have been 20 000 deaths in my country since the epidemic began. However, I was disappointed that the issue of reproductive rights and abortion was included in the resolution. While I believe that women must have appropriate access to legal abortion in order to keep them safe, it plays a slight role in the fight against HIV/AIDS. In my constituency of London, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital has made appropriate interventions to reduce the rate of mother-to-child HIV transmission to just 1%. The inclusion of reproductive rights in the resolution unfortunately caused a number of my colleagues in the ECR and the Conservative Party to vote against it. We must face up to HIV which, while being preventable, has no vaccine and no cure. I regret that a number of colleagues opposed, abstained or did not have the courage to vote on this resolution."@en1
