"It is symbolic that, at the same time, we are marking World AIDS Day and the twentieth anniversary of the death of perhaps the most famous person to have died from this disease, the singer Freddy Mercury. I welcome the European Parliament’s position and proposals for combating this disease more effectively, regarding information, prevention and the aspects relating to human rights. I nevertheless wish to draw attention to the fact that the resolution is quiet on one of the ways in which HIV is transmitted – through the use of intravenous drugs. In my country, Lithuania, more than 70% of HIV carriers have been infected in this very way. I am therefore convinced that if they wish to successfully combat the spread of HIV and AIDS, the Member States also have to take a comprehensive view of that in their anti-drug policies and strategies."@en1
