"A general EU response to HIV/AIDS is needed since this virus and illness affects 2.2 million people in the EU and neighbouring countries. According to the latest available data, around 26 000 people are infected each year in Europe and adjacent countries, and it is estimated that more than 30% of those infected are not aware of it. The Union must provide an effective and tailor-made response to the evolution and spread of this virus in order to fight it and help those already infected. It is a good thing that the Commission and the Council are acting swiftly to apply the communication entitled ‘Combating HIV/AIDS in the EU and neighbouring countries 2009-2013’. Positive, too, is the implementation of a specific action plan to fight against further infections, which is primarily made up of numerous information and awareness campaigns that will make everyone understand the severity of this phenomenon."@en1
