"I voted in favour of the resolution on the Single Market Forum. The first forum, which was held in October, enabled businesses, citizens, social partners, NGOs and public authorities at various levels to share their specific experiences and proposals regarding the current functioning of the single market. This exercise, which has the advantage of tapping various decentralised sources and of developing on the basis of the problems encountered on the ground, will most certainly be repeated. In 2012, we are even going to organise a ‘Single Market Week’ across all countries in the Union. In these times of economic crisis and uncertainty, it is more necessary than ever to give fresh impetus to the single market. To achieve this, the gap between what Europeans expect of the single market and what they actually get out of it will need to be bridged (let us remember, in this context, citizens’, consumers’ and SMEs’ lack of knowledge regarding their rights, obligations and opportunities in the single market). Its success will also need to be proven, through a demonstration of the prosperity it can bring to all Europeans, wherever they may be in the Union and whatever their nationality."@en1
