"The European Semester is a process for coordinating Member States’ economic policies, and is implemented by the European Union to enforce budgetary discipline as well as to ensure compliance with the Europe 2020 strategy. I agree with this report because the European institutions have adopted new measures aimed at helping Member States to correct excessive deficits and to establish greater coordination of their economic and budgetary policies.
However, I should like to point out that the European Semester cannot, and should not, replace the democratic legitimacy of the European Parliament and national parliaments; the situation should always be monitored by the respective parliamentary committee. As a member of the Committee on Regional Development, I should like to stress that a strong and properly financed cohesion policy is the only effective and efficient instrument for implementing the Europe 2020 strategy. It is therefore important to highlight its long-term development programmes, budgetary dimension and decentralised management system."@en1
