"The euro crisis is closely linked to the differences between Member States with regard to their economic and budgetary policies. The establishment of a ‘European Semester’ or ‘economic governance’ was therefore vital. The aim, with this new EU economic and budgetary policy coordination tool, is to check that Member States are applying budgetary discipline and to ensure that the Europe 2020 programme is being implemented properly by granting it adequate financial resources. With the introduction of the European Semester, we are one step closer to European integration. However, we should remember that parliamentary debate on the main economic policy guidelines is the cornerstone of every democratic system. Democratic debate must not be overlooked. I therefore fully support Ms Berès when she calls for complete transparency with regard to the amendments made to the country-specific recommendations following discussions with the Member States."@en1
