"I consider it important to change the European Parliament’s Rules of Procedure, which would, among other things, create a better overview of Members’ paid extra-parliamentary activities and the income connected therewith. Although I support Mr Casini’s report, I do not support sub-clause ‘e’ of the motion to amend clause 2 number 10, which would require Members of Parliament to declare in their declarations of economic interests only those extra-parliamentary expenses above EUR 5 000 per calendar year. I find that the establishment of such a limit is not justified because it would encourage the non-declaration of income that falls just short of the EUR 5 000 limit. In addition, it is unclear why EUR 5 000 should be chosen as the limit; why not EUR 2 000 or 200, for instance? EUR 5 000 is a large amount of money – in many Member States, it represents the annual pay of a worker who earns average wages. I believe that in the interests of greater transparency, Members of the European Parliament should declare all income received from extra-parliamentary activities, and if we are to set a limit, it could be 10 times lower, for instance, EUR 500."@en1
