"Twenty years after declaring independence, and almost eight years after applying for membership of the EU, Croatia has reached an historic milestone, with the successful completion of the accession talks and the country now in the process of joining the EU, and these successes deserve unconditional acknowledgement. The accession process is making a substantial contribution to Croatia’s transformation into a solid and mature democratic country whose membership can strengthen the Union, enrich its European culture and heritage and make a major contribution to preserving the credibility of the expansion process. Despite considerable progress, however, I firmly believe that it is important to continue with the reforms initiated, that it is necessary to focus particularly on commitments undertaken in the area of the judiciary, internal affairs and basic rights – including the protection of media freedom, the impartial resolution of war crimes cases, the fight against corruption, protection of minorities, border controls, police cooperation, the fight against organised crime and judicial cooperation in civil and criminal matters – as well as on commitments undertaken in the area of competition policy. Croatia’s determination to combat corruption, and also the progress achieved in the area of women’s rights and gender equality, for example, are pleasing. It is desirable for Croatia to continue consolidating good neighbourly relations, to continue as an important and active promoter of regional cooperation at all levels, and to back up its efforts towards membership with steps that will be economically, socially and generally beneficial to all citizens of this region."@en1
