"Croatia’s accession to the European Union is a very positive sign for the Balkans. Croatia has achieved the set of political and economic criteria set out at the Copenhagen European Council in 1993, as well as the adaptation and implementation of the EU
as described in the Commission’s opinion of October 2011.
The accession of Croatia to the EU on 1 July 2013 will set an example for other Balkan countries, showing that efforts to comply with the Copenhagen criteria can bear fruit. In the specific case of Croatia, issues such as the fight against corruption, the independent judiciary, and the pursuit of war criminals and cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia has led to negotiations dragging on since 2003, when Croatia made its first request to join the EU.
I congratulate the Croatian authorities for their efforts, but I would also like to emphasise that the rules should be equally applied to all candidate and potential candidate countries."@en1
