"I abstained in the vote on Croatia’s request to join the European Union. There is no doubt that Croatia has made significant progress in recent years on reforming its legal system and public administration, fighting corruption and organised crime, and protecting the rights of minorities. However, I am sure that much remains to be done in remembrance of the huge ethnic cleansing of the Italian population carried out between 1945 and 1948 by the militia of the Croatian authorities of the former Yugoslavian communist regime. Above all, no commitment has been made to recognise the rights of exiles, starting with the property that was confiscated during those years."@en1
