"I voted in favour of adopting the report, since as a Pole and as a member of the Delegation to the EU-Russia Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, I am delighted by the announcement that there will be visa-free traffic over the border for the inhabitants of the Russian Kaliningrad Region and the Polish border areas. This is an achievement for my country, for the European Union as a whole, and, at the same time, also for Russia, in the spirit of opening ourselves up freely to each other for a better future.
It is not politicians who shape border contacts, but the open flow of ordinary citizens. With them comes economic and intellectual potential, which gives rise to the multifaceted development of border areas, ranging from tourism, through business, to culture. This is the reason for the great interest in my country in visa-free travel to Kaliningrad and the strong desire to include additional areas.
Unfortunately, the name of the Russian region, which is derived from Kalinin, a Soviet functionary who was an accomplice in the murder of Polish officers in Katyn, has negative associations in Poland. The traditional name Królewiec can be used in Poland for Kaliningrad to resolve this problem."@en1
