"I voted in favour of the Simpson report on the proposal for a regulation on statistical returns in respect of the carriage of goods by road. In order to fulfil the tasks which it has been assigned as part of the common transport policy, the Commission must have available comparable, reliable, synchronised, regulated and comprehensive returns about the scope and development of freight transport using vehicles registered in the EU, and about the level of use of the vehicles providing this transport. Comprehensive regional statistics need to be compiled on both freight transport and the trips made by the vehicles. According to the principle of subsidiarity, the standard common statistics which enable harmonised information to be obtained can be compiled better only at EU level. The data will be collected in each Member State under the authority of the bodies and institutions which are tasked with compiling official statistics. Member States must provide statistics on freight transport using freight transport vehicles registered in the relevant Member State and on the trips made by these vehicles. Member States shall supply Eurostat every quarter with separate, thoroughly verified returns, without indicating names, addresses or registration numbers."@en1
