No person can be punished for a publicly expressed opinion if such a statement does not show any signs of criminality. Attention should be drawn to the fact that the immunity of an MEP is an institutional arrangement and guarantee of independence, offering protection from external pressure and ensuring the independence of MEPs in the performance of their duties.
