"Mr President, today we approved the EU budget for 2012, agreeing to an increase in spending of 2% and this actually represented a victory for Member States and taxpayers over this Parliament and the Commission. Hard though it is to believe, the Commission called for an increase of 4.3% and the Parliament wanted an increase of 5.3% – this at a time when national governments are having to increase taxes and cut expenditure at home.
Could there be any better illustration of how detached both the Commission and this Parliament have become from the real world? In my view, even a 2% increase is too high; we should cut the EU budget and save our taxpayers’ money. Rather than asking for increases in funds, the Commission should concentrate on spending wisely the money it already receives."@en1
