"For the past 23 years, World AIDS Day has been observed on 1 December. This year marks the sad anniversary of 30 years since the first case of this disease was discovered. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of scientists, it has not yet been possible to prevent effectively the spread of the HIV virus. Furthermore, research has shown that incidence of the disease has increased during the crisis. World AIDS Day is an opportunity to show our support for those living with the virus, people who are often suffering, and to remember those who lost the fight against AIDS. Let me make the second statement. We are voting today on Croatia’s Accession Treaty. During this journey towards European membership, dialogue between our parliaments has been a driving force in moving forward an impressive number of reforms, but also in building true friendship. I was myself on an official visit to Croatia a few weeks ago and I remember the extraordinary welcome I received, and it was a welcome for all the Members of the European Parliament. It is a great pleasure and honour for me to announce that today, we welcome the Speaker of the Croatian Parliament, Mr Luka Bebić, who is present in the gallery. We look forward to welcoming members of the Croatian Parliament permanently in this House, first as observers and then as full Members. You, dear Speaker of the Parliament, and your colleagues, are already full members of the European family. Welcome."@en1
