"Mr President, today’s regime in Iran, which uses violence as an instrument of power to torture its opponents, must be condemned and sanctions must be imposed against it. Executions, death sentences, violations of the rights of people under arrest, condemnations of defenders of civil rights, and non-compliance with fundamental agreements on civil and political rights are not acceptable by any standards.
All this is happening in Iran at a time when authoritarian regimes in the Arab world are changing and when we express our support for and solidarity with fighters for human rights in that part of the world. I believe that respect for fundamental human rights is the basis for the normal functioning of any society, regardless of which faith, culture or ethnic group predominates. I also believe that growing repression against those fighting for their basic rights cannot be tolerated forever. I fully support the resolution that has been proposed."@en1
