"I agree with the rapporteur that an open and neutral Internet which ensures broad access to unbiased information is vitally important. The rapporteur is right in saying that the Internet and the media can encourage democratic reforms and social change. Unfortunately, when the subject turns to unrestricted access to information, it should be noted that in Lithuania, there are problems with media freedom and objectivity. I am sad to say that the Lithuanian Government is able to manipulate Lithuanian journalists and the media. Of course, the financial crisis has also undermined the ethical conduct of the media in Lithuania. Two years ago, the Lithuanian media’s tax exemption was abolished. Currently, the media must pay 21% tax like other businesses. It is said that this factor has contributed to the spread of corruption in the Lithuanian media. New press laws that were introduced in the middle of the 1990s were inspired by the press laws of the Scandinavian countries. However, we still lack the will and integrity to enforce these laws."@en1
