"Mr President, I should like to say that the European Union is the world’s biggest maritime power largely as a result of its outermost regions. They are a major asset for Europe, and so the development and implementation of a comprehensive policy on the seas, oceans and seabed are essential for the future. However, I fear that EUR 20 million or EUR 50 million will not be enough to meet this great challenge. The fight against illegal fishing is part of this major policy, and there is an urgent need, at EU level, to find an appropriate solution to this problem, particularly in the context of international cooperation.
I would also point out that the maritime areas of Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Mayotte and Réunion are regularly raped and pillaged. As the report includes no mention of it, I am taking advantage of this opportunity to draw the attention of my fellow Members and the Commission to this particular problem."@en1
