"Mr President, what I am missing from the current debate is the element which would encourage the citizens of the European Union to place more confidence in us. What is it that I am referring to? We are talking about the crisis in Europe; however, the way we are talking about it is as if it has fallen out of the sky, as if it was a part of some natural disaster, even though we can trace the litany of errors which have been made and which have led to the current crisis. If we want this crisis to mark a new beginning, a better start for Europe, then for our own credibility, we have to own up to those elements of our structure that have failed. This does not imply euroscepticism or a negation of the European Union. On the contrary, admitting to the mistakes that we have committed will only strengthen our credibility. I do hope that this crisis will present an opportunity to build a ‘greater Europe’. The question, however, is what does a ‘greater Europe’ mean? Does it imply more bureaucracy, more regulation and consequently less competitiveness, or does it signify a greater Europe with a larger free and single market?"@en1
