"This agreement, which is intended to replace the bilateral agreements between the various Member States and Jordan, is emerging as a key element of the European neighbourhood policy because it advocates increased closeness between the EU and Jordan. Indeed, it is important to keep in mind that the European Union is currently Jordan’s second biggest trade partner, so it is committed to the process of affirming and consolidating democracy in this area. The Euro-Mediterranean Aviation Agreement between the European Union and its Member States and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan offers a suitable regulatory framework for enabling airlines to increase the number of air links between the two territories, whilst operating with great freedom. Essentially, what is being sought is greater market opening through the introduction of more equitable rules and of non-discrimination for economic operators, on the one hand, and the harmonisation of legislation relating to safety, security and air traffic management, on the other. It is estimated that, in the first year of application of the agreement, there will be 54 000 extra passengers with an overall economic benefit of EUR 30 million. I voted in favour for these reasons."@en1
