"As an area of freedoms, consumer protection has been one of the guiding principles of the European Union since the very beginning. What is currently before Parliament for assessment is a new consumer protection strategy. This new strategy constitutes a milestone in EU consumer policy, since it gives concrete meaning, for the first time, to the principle enshrined in the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, according to which consumer interests have to be taken into account in all other relevant EU policies.
The essential aims of this strategy, which is given concrete expression in the ‘Consumer Agenda’, are more sustainable private consumption, the safety of food and products, the protection of children from today’s aggressive advertising, and the development of a digital environment favourable to the maximum absorption of information by consumers. At bottom, the intention is to adapt the available legal instruments to the new challenges that have been emerging, so promoting an improved supply of services, and safeguarding the health of consumers and of the environment itself. I voted in favour because I consider this approach suitable."@en1
