"As the rapporteur says, the European apiculture sector is part of European cultural heritage and the national traditions of some Member States. In this context, the Portuguese case stands out because Portugal is part of the group of professional beekeeping Member States. Although the economic scale of this sector is significant, with around 600 000 Europeans directly or indirectly dependent on it, it should be said that this is not the only important issue: it is also about the environmental effects, since bees play a central role in the ecological balance. There is therefore justification for a holistic approach suitable for confronting the sector’s problems: the recent increases in bee mortality, the presence of toxic agents that have been damaging the health of hives, and the increasing average age of beekeepers, which are jeopardising the subsistence of the sector. I voted in favour because I share these concerns."@en1
