"Consumer rights and their protection under EU law is one of the core principles of how the internal market functions. For this very reason, it seems appropriate to me to make consumers central to policies whose purpose is the better implementation of the internal market. I will say once again that I believe adequate consumer protection and security are fundamental to the proper functioning of the markets and to trade, which constitute an essential condition of competitiveness and growth. As such, it is crucial to strike a balance between a high level of consumer protection – especially as regards the level of information provided to them and accountability for any harm caused to them – and the costs this will impose on businesses. At this point, I should like to congratulate the Commission on its work relating to the proposal concerning unfair trade practices, which is critical if we are to have an adequate policy for protecting consumers and the internal market."@en1
