"We are all aware that the more than 400 million consumers provide the heart and driving force of the European economy. According to the latest Eurobarometer survey on consumer empowerment from April this year, most consumers feel knowledgeable, but, at the same time, a considerable number have gaps in their knowledge about basic consumer legislation.
European citizens play a key role in achieving the Europe 2020 strategy objectives, but consumer expenditure generates more than half the EU’s GDP. In light of this, I think that European consumer policy must play an important role in shifting the focus point in this policy to the issues which are focused on citizens. European consumer policy must empower EU consumers more by providing correct information, market transparency and effective protection for them against the risks and threats to which they are subject."@en1
