"In one sense, services of general economic interest are a reflection of the EU economic model. Without seeking to stop guaranteeing the universal provision of a given range of fundamental services, the intention is to allocate the operation of these services to the private sector, so as to achieve a greater level of efficiency. However, since they are obliged to provide these services universally, these private entities have the right to compensation to cover the non-profitable element of their activity. As such, a proposal to reform the system for this compensation has been subjected to Parliament’s scrutiny. With regard to this, I believe that, while we should ensure transparency in the application of rules for allocation of compensation, there is also justification for speeding up the procedure, thereby making this process more efficient. I therefore voted in favour."@en1
