"The numbers and statistics contained in the report on the platform against poverty in the EU clearly illustrate the problem. Unemployment among young people has shot through the roof in the EU following the economic crisis; it is now over 20% and is reaching critical levels in all the Member States. Allow me to add some figures from my country, from Greece. In a recent survey, 60% of Greeks stated that they live in fear of waking up poor one day, while 50% believe that anyone may ‘be made’ poor by a random event, such as illness or dismissal late in life. The so-called ‘EUR 700 generation’ is the subject of research for contemporary sociologists and economists. Everyone wonders how they manage. As stated in the report, the number of impoverished workers at European level has increased significantly, with 8% of workers living in severe deprivation and 22% of workers at risk of poverty. These numbers should worry us, especially as the Arab Spring was set off by dissatisfaction among young people and their disappointment in their leaders, who failed to offer them a future. Unless the situation changes, social clashes will be inevitable."@en1
