"The economic crisis is having a profound impact throughout the EU, and the number of people at risk of poverty – which stood at 80 million even before the crisis – continues to rise. I would also like to make some comments on the report that are related to the crisis. The acute ‘anti-crisis’ measures are pushing the Europe 2020 strategy measures completely into the background. These include, specifically, inclusive growth, targets related to reducing poverty and social exclusion, and policies for boosting investment in the social area.
I would also like to call on the Commission to carry out a study of the social impacts of the approved anti-crisis measures. I would be very interested to hear the Commission’s estimates of the social impacts resulting from the policy of cost-cutting, the package of measures on economic governance or the Euro Plus pact. I am quite sure that these are the wrong measures at this time, precisely because they ignore the issues of poverty and social exclusion. The Commission should therefore establish an independent monitoring mechanism to verify these concerns in the field.
I would like to end with a small, specific comment on the text regarding the platform. The text talks about ‘social experimentation’. Although it is clear from the context that this refers to innovative policies for combating poverty, I would recommend replacing that phrase, as it has extremely negative connotations."@en1
