"On 15 November, the European Parliament debated the report on the European platform for the fight against poverty and social exclusion. It is a sad fact that the EU, as one of the richest areas of the world, has more than 80 million citizens at risk of poverty, of whom 20 million are children and more than 6 million belong to the active population. Such a state of affairs is incompatible with the European values and solidarity enshrined in the Treaties. The financial crisis of 2008 has aggravated this phenomenon, as well as increasing the pressure on the most vulnerable sectors of the population. Although the fight against poverty and social exclusion is exclusively within the jurisdiction of Member States, the EU can play an important role in terms of raising awareness of this problem, improving coordination and financing activities in Member States aimed at tackling poverty and social exclusion. This many-sided problem requires an integrated response, including the joint efforts of all levels of public administration, from European to local authority level. I personally believe that local authorities can implement the most effective tools, as they are closest to these groups, and these tools must be supplemented by systemic measures in social systems at the level of every Member State, with the aim of reducing poverty and social exclusion."@en1
