"Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, the weakest social groups, in particular, young people, women and the disabled, are those that have been hit hardest by the financial, economic and social crisis. The European Union must recognise vulnerable categories as one of its priorities, implementing the European platform against poverty and social exclusion.
I emphasise the need to support the European food distribution scheme to the most deprived people in the EU, in particular, for women who are often the first victims of food poverty. Of fundamental importance is the call to Member States to guarantee adequate support to single-parent families that are at high risk of poverty; this should be not simply economic aid but also social aid through improving access to different facilities, for example, child care institutions. I hope that the European institutions, along with the Member States, will combine their efforts."@en1
